From Local Efforts to Global Impact with the CHOICE Horizon Project

November 19, 2024

The climate crisis is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, with the food system playing a pivotal role in shaping our planet's future. Accounting for one-third of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the food sector must undergo transformative changes to meet the 1.5°C climate goal.

Recognising this urgency, inoqo recently hosted its first participatory lab as part of the CHOICE project, a Horizon Europe initiative. CHOICE aims to make Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) essential tools for driving sustainable decisions in food, agriculture, and land-use sectors. These models help assess the impact of climate actions and guide consumers, producers, and stakeholders toward more sustainable choices.

inoqo’s role in CHOICE

As an active contributor to the CHOICE project, inoqo collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders to drive meaningful change across the food chain. The Austrian pilot, led by inoqo, exemplifies how local efforts can create global impact. Our focus includes:

✔ Assessing Product Sustainability

inoqo's platform empowers retailers to evaluate the sustainability of products using CHOICE’s IAMs, offering a comprehensive view of environmental and social impacts.

✔ Encouraging Sustainable Food Choices

By leveraging CHOICE’s behavioural science methods, inoqo inspires sustainable consumption through innovative tools like nudging, gamification, and controlled testing.

✔ Promoting Transparency

inoqo facilitates clear and impactful communication about products’ environmental and social footprints, based on data from IAMs and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

✔ Leading Consumer Engagement

inoqo supports its retail partners in leading large-scale campaigns, actively engaging consumers and tracking measurable behaviour changes toward sustainability.

Data as a Key Driver for Sustainable Consumer Behavior

The participatory lab brought together organisations from industries such as food, retail, biotechnology, agriculture, and consulting to explore strategies for influencing consumer behaviour and promoting sustainability. Our CEO and Founder, Markus Linder, moderated the participatory lab together with partners from the Institute of Communication & Computer Systems (ICCS).

A key highlight was the emphasis on insights and data as a tool for driving change. From lifecycle assessments (LCAs) that uncover the true environmental impact of products to scaling innovative alternatives, data-driven approaches empower stakeholders to make informed, responsible decisions.

  • For businesses, clear and evidence-based labelling builds trust and guides consumers toward sustainable products.
  • For consumers, accessible and transparent information connects everyday choices with measurable impacts, fostering a deeper sense of accountability.

A Global Approach with Local Impact

The CHOICE project exemplifies how localised efforts can contribute to global sustainability. By integrating advanced IAMs and behavioural science with on-the-ground actions, CHOICE bridges the gap between high-level climate models and everyday decision-making.

Moreover, the project underscores the importance of collaboration, uniting a consortium of 16 organisations, including NGOs, SMEs, research institutes, and academic institutions, across eight countries. From Austria’s focus on promoting healthier and more sustainable food consumption habits to Colombia’s empowerment of women coffee producers, each initiative highlights the impact of tailored, actionable solutions.

Join the Movement

CHOICE is more than a project—it’s a call to action. By combining innovation, data-driven strategies, and collaboration, CHOICE paves the way for a more sustainable food system and a healthier planet.
